The Gaumukh–Tapovan trek is where spirituality meets raw Himalayan wilderness. Starting from the sacred town of Gangotri, the trail follows the Bhagirathi river deep into the Gangotri National Park — home to blue pines, silver birches, bharals (blue sheep), and even elusive snow leopards. The journey takes you past Bhojwasa, named after the ancient birch forests that once covered the valley, and leads to Gaumukh, the revered glacier snout and birthplace of the Ganga. Beyond lies Tapovan — a windswept high-altitude meadow at 14,500 ft, framed by the mighty Shivling, Meru, and Bhagirathi peaks. Here, saints, mountaineers, and trekkers alike find themselves humbled by the scale and silence of the mountains. This trek is not just a physical adventure — it’s a pilgrimage through geology, mythology, and one of India’s grandest alpine landscapes.
